Key Elements
The JOCHS approach encompasses a number of key elements:
- Building partnerships among institutions of public health, public safety, and community health to establish an enduring medical home for vulnerable youth who are brought to detention centers.
- Providing health assessments at intake for all youth who are brought in to detention centers, whether or not they are detained.
- Connecting youth to appropriate, culturally competent physical and mental health care services from local providers, either in the detention center or in the community.
- Making health education and continuity of care a component of the transition and re-entry process for all youth released from a detention center.
- Capturing Medicaid revenues for all eligible youth and services delivered throughout the continuum from intake to release.
